Connecting a Microphone to Your Traktor S4 MK4

The Traktor S4 MK4 is a popular DJ controller designed for professional DJs and music producers. One of its key features is its ability to connect external microphones, allowing you to add vocals or other sounds to your mixes. In this article, we will walk you through the process of connecting a microphone to your Traktor S4 MK4.

Enabling the Microphone Pre-Amp

To begin, press and hold one of the SHIFT buttons and the corresponding EXT button on the Deck where the microphone is plugged into (in our example, it's Deck D). This will enable the microphone pre-amp. Note that you cannot use both the MIC and Input Channels at the same time.

Selecting the Correct Inputs

The Traktor S4 MK3 has a different configuration for its rear microphone input (MIC C) compared to the front microphone input (MIC D). For this reason, we will be selecting the inputs called 7: D-L Line/Mic (Front) and 8: D-R Line/Mic (Front) as shown below. For Traktor S4 MK2 users, select 5: Mic In (Mono) and 6: Mic In (Mono) for Input Aux L(Mono) and R. For Traktor S4 MK1 users, select 3: In Ch D Left and 4: In Ch D Right for Input Aux L(Mono) and R.

Configuring the TRAKTOR Preferences

To ensure that your microphone input is properly configured, go to the TRAKTOR Preferences > Input Routing and make sure that the Input Aux channel is set to the microphone input. Additionally, make sure that the USB/THRU switch on the rear panel of the device is set to USB.

Connecting Your Microphone

Finally, connect your microphone to the MIC D input located at the front side of the S4 MK3, or the MIC C input located at the backside of the device. In this configuration, the microphone signal is sent through TRAKTOR's Aux channel and is therefore not processed through TRAKTOR's Mixer, Decks, or FX.
